Planning My Summer Bucket List of Cape Breton Experiences

Readersdigest.ca (yes, affiliated with THAT Reader’s Digest) recently released their 8 essential Cape Breton experiences. It must have been near impossible to narrow the list to just 8.

Among the hiking and kite flying experiences are two very Celtic experiences that are on my list of places to visit this summer - the Celtic Music Interpretive Centre in Judique and Glenora Distillery in Glenville.

I’ll be honest, it has been many years since I’ve tapped my toes to a jig and my “Introduction to Step Dancing” lessons ended because of my lack of coordination. Really, it’s shocking that I am even allowed to be called a Cape Bretoner! However, I do enjoy a nice little Cape Breton lunch and ceilidh and the Celtic Music Interpretive Centre will be offering these daily in the summer months.

Glenora Distillery also made the list and the Inn also received a mention as the “cheery inn attached to the distillery.” Glenora Distillery does provide a truly unique Cape Breton experience. With the traditional Scottish distillery, lush gardens and landscape, and the local Celtic entertainment in the pub, it is easy to feel like you’re in Scotland. And that’s before you consume a wee drink of Glenora’s famous single malt whisky!

Cape Breton is known for its dancing, music and Celtic culture but until recently we weren’t that well known for our “spirits.” Since 2000, the Distillery has been producing and/or bottling a number of products including its flagship offering, Glen Breton Rare, North America’s 1st single malt whisky. Glen Breton has won many accolades and praise from whisky enthusiasts and connoisseurs. I am sure after sampling their fares, I’ll be an even bigger fan of Glenora.

Perhaps a stop at the Distillery and then the Celtic Music Interpretive Centre will help bring out the Cape Bretoner in me and I’ll be dancing a jig in no time. I’ll let you know…
