The North Shore is halfway between Baddeck and Ingonish on the world famous Cabot Trail. It get its name as the North Shore of St. Ann's Bay. The area has a rich history of Gaelic language and traditions and, of course, is where the world renowned North Shore Gaelic Singers were from. The community of North River is just down the road from the North Shore, and the North River itself flows into St. Ann's Harbour, which leads to St. Ann's Bay. The North River Community Hall is one of those tiny gathering places where the community comes together to keep the traditions alive through Gaelic singing, square dances and milling frolics. Tonight in the hall they will be singing the tunes, from the North Shore as well as from Scotland. Meantime is a group of Gaelic-speaking traditional musicians from the west coast of Scotland, where many of the region's settlers came from. While at Celtic Colours, they will be working on songwriting and sharing of Gaelic songs. Cape Breton singer-songwriter Buddy MacDonald is the son of North Shore Gaelic Singer Tommy "Peggy" MacDonald. Anita MacDonald and Susan MacLean represent the next generation who are learning about the culture and inspired to embody it.
Arrive early, and enjoy a Community Potluck Supper in St. Andrew's Church, walking distance from the Concert Venue.
