Hearts are heavy today in Cape Breton and beyond with the passing of Cape Breton’s first lady of song, Rita MacNeil. Rita died last evening (April 16th, 2013) from complications following surgery, at the age of 68.

Cape Breton is justifiably well known for its traditional music players. We have many world class fiddlers, piano players & singers who perform internationally.

However, when I was writing a previous blog about Buddy MacDonald, I was reminded of the depth of songwriting talent that this tiny beautiful island has produced as well. We seem to have an unusually high number of musicians for our population and the same can be said for songwriters.

It's was a beautiful day in Cape Breton today. And it seems even nicer now that summer is officially here!

Today marked summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. And this year summer solstice comes a day early since it's a leap year.

Now that it is almost May, it's time to start thinking about fall. Yes, I mean fall, as in the season that follows summer... what do you mean it's too early? Go away with ya!

Seriously, I love the spring and summer and can't even begin to think past the end of the dog days of summer. Luckily we don't have to... the kind folks at the Celtic Colours International Festival are planning our fall activities for us!
