Trì cheud bliadhna bhuaithe seo bha Eilean Cheap Breatainn fo smachd nam Frangach agus 's dòcha gur ann bhuapa-san a fhuair sinn an t-ainm "Ceap Breatainn" ach cha chreid mi gu bheil cinnt aig duine sam bith a thaobh sin. A réir mo chuid fhiosrachd, chan eil sinn cinnteach idir cia ás a thàinig an t-ainm "Ceap Breatainn" no cò a chleachd air thùs e.

The Scottish Gaelic influence is strong in Nova Scotia. Our very name New Scotland embodies it. You can find it at the Colaisde Na Gàidhlig/Gaelic College in St. Ann’s and at the Highland Village/An Clachan Gàidhealach in Iona. Our Celtic culture greets you with Ciad Mile Failte (100,000 welcomes) at a milling frolic, concert and ceilidh.

Taibhsean agus rudan os-nàdurra. 'S e cuspair a thogadh inntinn daoine 's dòcha cho fad 's a tha sinn air a bhith air an talamh. Chan eil mi cinnteach a bheil seann taigh, àite eachdraidheil no làrach cliùiteach air nach bi naidheachd no dhà orra.

Saoilidh mi gu tric cho tlachdmhor 's a tha e bhith 'g obair ann an saoghal na Gàidhlig, agus 's e a' phrìomh aobhar a th' ann na daoine gasda ris an tachair thu.

Mar a bhios mi teagasg na Gàidhlig air loidhne leis an Acadamaidh Gàidhlig an Atlantaig, cuiridh mi an aithne air iomadh duine á àiteachan céin, eadar Aimeiriaga a Tuath, Roinn Eòrpa, an Deas Roinn agus Aisia - agus a h-uile neach aca ri ionnsachadh na Gàidhlig!

It’s interesting how language is influenced and changes over time. I started travelling to Scotland in the mid 90’s and loved hearing the shopkeepers say “cheers” when they handed over my purchase. Ten years later I began to hear the same in Nova Scotia.
